WORKING COPY - DRAFT FOR PRACTISE ONLY.
DO NOT COPY OR DISTRIBUTE

IMPORTANT NOTES for this online version:

Please be aware that this is only a working draft for the Dakini Long Life Puja for Zasep Rinpoche Baghs-aa being offered April 26, 2009 in Toronto, and should not be used for any purpose other than for gaining familiarity with the overall structure of the ceremony, and the various melodies that will be sung. Some minor restructuring will be done, and other changes made, before the final version of the text is available. Also, this online version has some HTML formatting inconsistencies, for which we apologize. This preliminary draft is being made available well in advance only as an aid to those who wish to start practising early. Best of all would be for you to join us at our weekly rehearsals each Sunday!

The text below contains links to online audio (colored, underlined text) that demonstrates the melody of that line and subsequent lines, sung with the melodies that we will be using in the puja offering. Generally, all verses after the linked text will use that same melody. When a new melody is introduced, a new linked line is shown. When a new melody begins, or after there is a significant break between sections, the omze (chant leader) sings the first line alone. Then everyone joins in on the second line and continues together until a new melody is used.

The long and short mandala sections have their own melody, not given in any of the links. (sorry!)

Verses shown with alternating Tibetan and English lines are generally sung in Tibetan only, with the English translation provided only as an aid to greater understanding of and appreciation for the meaning of the offering. Verses given only in English are spoken or sung, and generally repeat an earlier verse that was sung in Tibetan.

The melody for the initial "Taking Refuge" section (before the actual puja begins), is the melody traditionally used at Gaden Choling.

May your smile, like a full moon in a night in the autumn,

Shine undiminished until the end of existence.

Bodhisattva Losang Tendzin Gyaltsen, please remain firmly with us!

Though the pernicious mind, like an elephant, is difficult to tame,

You have controlled it with the sharp hook of mental alertness.

Never crossing beyond the bounds of the rules of Vinaya,

May you, Reverend Elder, truly live long!

Explaining in detail through exacting discernment,

The lapis-lazuli lineage of the Sutras and Tantras,

In well-spoken rhymes of complete perfection,

May your melodious tones always proclaim the Scriptures

And grace the ears of we fortunate ones!

Thus the teachings of Father Jampel Nyingpo (Tsongkhapa),

Are like a wick in a lamp of refined molten gold,

May you through your life of purity and goodness,

Be one who raises its flame higher and higher,

And ever remain steadfastly with us!

By the compassion of the Triple Gem and the Ocean of Conquerors;

By the power of the Dharma Protectors long-trusted and honored;

By the true strength of unequivocal causal interdependence;

May the purpose of this prayer be accomplished,

Spontaneously and without hindrance!

89.   OM VAJRA BHUMI AH HUM

Great and powerful golden ground,

OM VAJRA REKHE AH HUM

At the edge the iron fence stands around the outer circle.

In the centre Mount Meru the king of mountains,

Around which are four continents:

In the east, Purvavideha, in the south, Jambudipa,

In the west, Aparagodaniya, in the north, Uttarakuru.

Each has two sub-continents:

Deha and Videha, Tsamara and Abatsamara,

Satha and Uttaramantrina, Kurava and Kaurava.

The mountain of jewels, the wish-granting tree,

The wish-granting cow, and the harvest unsown.

The precious wheel, the precious jewel,

The precious queen, the precious minister,

The precious elephant, the precious supreme horse,

The precious general, and the great treasure vase.

The goddess of beauty, the goddess of garlands,

The goddess of music, the goddess of dance,

The goddess of flowers, the goddess of incense,

The goddess of light, and the goddess of scent.

The sun and the moon, the precious umbrella,

The banner of victory in every direction.

In the centre all treasures of both gods and men,

An excellent collection with nothing left out.

I offer this to you my kind root Guru and lineage Gurus,

To all of you sacred and glorious Gurus;

And especially to you, great Lama Lobsang Tubwang Dorjechang together with your retinues.

Please accept with compassion for migrating beings, and having accepted, out of your great compassion,

Please bestow your blessings on all sentient beings pervading space.

90.  Particularly, for the life of the unequaled Master of all teachings,

The magnificent Noble and Supreme

Venerable Lama Lozang Tendzin Gyaltsen Zasep Tulku Rinpoche,

To remain firmly for the myriads of kalpas,

For the purpose of the teachings and migrating sentient beings,

And to give thanks for his well-obtained speech,

We offer the fields and realms.

 Short Mandala Offering

91.  The ground with scent is blessed and with flowers strewn

adorned with Mount Meru, the four lands, the sun and moon,

transformed as a pure land and then offered,

may all wandering beings enjoy this Buddha realm.

92.  O holy venerable Lamas, from the clouds of compassion

That form in the skies of your Dharmakaya wisdom,

Please release a rain of vast and profound Dharma

Precisely in accordance with the needs of those to be trained.

93.  May the venerable Guru’s life be stable

And may perfectly pure actions prosper in the ten directions.

May the lamp of the teachings of Losang Dragpa always remain

To dispel the darkness of the three realms’ transmigrators.

And Vajrapani, the destroyer of the hosts of maras.

O Venerable Guru-Buddha, synthesis of all Three Jewels With my body, speech,

Special Visualization of Purification, Accumulation and Guru Yoga

100.         By offering this prayer, from the bodies of the assembly of Lamas and Deities,

nectar with five-colored rays streams forth. By absorbing into the body and mind

of myself and all other sentient beings, all the negativities and obscurations

accumulated since beginningless time, and particularly all the dangers to the
Lama’s body: broken vows, mental disturbances, lack of faith, despising, etc., that
have been done; in short, all the negativities in relation to the Lamas, go out from
the sense doors and all the pores of the body, like smoke and coals, purifying and
cleansing. The body becomes clean-clear, in the nature of light. Our life, merits,
all the qualities and knowledge of the scriptural and realized teachings are
increased and developed. Particularly, all the blessings of the magnificent Lama’s
body, speech and mind, enter the body and mind of myself and all sentient beings.
Thereby, I and all sentient beings are under the protection of the magnificent Lama.

(Do the visualization and contemplate the meaning.)

The Graduated Path Lam-rim Meditation Prayer

Through the power of having made offerings and respectful requests to you, O Holy and Venerable Gurus, supreme Field of Merit, we seek your blessings that we may come under your joyful care, O Protectors and root of well-being and bliss.

Realizing how this body of liberties and endowments is found but once, is difficult to obtain, and is easily lost, we seek your blessings to partake of its essence, make it worthwhile, and not be distracted by the meaningless affairs of this life.

Aghast at the searing blaze of suffering in the lower realms, we take heartfelt refuge in the Three Precious Gems, and seek your blessings that we may eagerly endeavor to practice the various means for abandoning what is bound to misfortune, and accumulate virtuous deeds.

Violently tossed amidst waves of delusions and karma, plagued by hordes of watery denizens –the three kinds of suffering – we seek your blessings to develop an intense longing to be free from this monstrous ocean of boundless and vicious existence.

Having abandoned the mind that views this unbearable dungeon of cyclic existence as the pleasure grove, we seek your blessings to partake of the treasure of the Aryas’ jewels and three higher trainings, and thereby uphold Liberation's banner.

Having considered how all these pitiful beings have been our mothers and have raised us in kindness again and again, we seek your blessings to develop unaffected compassion like that of a loving mother for her precious child.

There is no difference between ourselves and others; no one wishes even the slightest suffering or is ever content with the happiness they have. Realizing this, we seek your blessing that we may enhance the bliss and joy of others.

This chronic disease of cherishing ourselves is the cause giving rise to our unsought suffering.  Perceiving this, we seek your blessings to blame, begrudge, and destroy the monstrous demon of selfishness.

The mind that cherishes all mother beings and would secure them in bliss is the gateway leading to infinite virtue. Seeing this, we seek your blessings to cherish these beings more than our lives, even should they rise up as our enemies.

In brief, infantile beings labor only for their own ends while Buddhas work solely for the welfare of others.  With the mind understanding the distinctions between the failings of one and the advantages of the other, we seek your blessings to enable us to equalize and exchange ourselves for others.

Since cherishing ourselves is the doorway to all torment, while cherishing our mothers is the foundation for all that is good, we seek your blessings to make our core practice the yoga of exchange of self for others.

And thus, O venerable, compassionate Gurus, we seek your blessings that all karmic debts, obstacles and sufferings of mother beings, without exception, ripen upon us right now, and that we may give over our happiness and virtues to others and thereby invest all beings in bliss. (3X)

Should even the environment and the beings therein be filled with the fruits of their karmic debts, and unwished-for sufferings pour down like rain, we seek your blessings to take these miserable conditions as a path by seeing them as causes to exhaust the results of our negative karma.

In short, no matter what appearances may arise, be they good or bad, we seek your blessings to transform them into a path ever-enhancing the two Bodhicittas through the practice of the five forces – the quintessence of the entire Dharma – and thus to attune ourselves solely to the bliss of the mind.

Whatever we occasion to meet, we seek your blessings that we may adapt it to our meditation by the skilful means of the four acts of use.  May we render this life of liberties and endowments infinitely meaningful by putting into practice the advice and commitments of the training of the mind.

In order to rescue all beings from the immense sea of existence, we seek your blessings to become adept in Bodhicitta through a pure selfless wish, and by love and compassion conjoined with the visual technique of mounting giving and taking upon the breath.

We seek your blessings that we may eagerly endeavor to put into practice the three Mahayana moral codes and restrain our mind-streams with pure Bodhisattva vows, the single path journeyed by all Victorious Ones of the three times.

We seek your blessings to complete the Perfection of Generosity through the guide line teaching for enhancing the mind that gives without attachment, namely transforming our bodies, wealth and collection of virtues over the three times into the objects desired by each and every sentient being.

We seek your blessings to complete the Perfection of the Moral Discipline of working for the sake of sentient beings, enacting virtuous deeds, and not transgressing the bounds of the Pratimoksa, Bodhicitta, and Tantric vows, even at the cost of our lives.

Should even all myriad beings of the three realms, without exception, become angry at us, humiliate, criticize, threaten, or even kill us, we seek your blessings to complete the Perfection of Patience, not to be distraught, but to work for their benefit in response to their harm.

Even if we must remain for an ocean of eons in the fiery hells of Avici, even for the sake of each sentient being, we seek your blessings to complete the Perfection of Joyous Effort, to strive with compassion for supreme Enlightenment, and not to be discouraged.

Having abandoned the faults of dullness, agitation, and mental wandering, we seek your blessings to complete the Perfection of Meditative Concentration through the samadhi of single-pointed placement upon the nature of reality – that all things are void of independent existence.

We seek your blessings to complete the Perfection of Wisdom through the space-like yoga of single-minded placement upon ultimate truth, conjoined with the ecstasy and great bliss induced by the discriminating wisdom analyzing Suchness.

We seek your blessings to perfect samadhi on illusion by realizing how all external and internal phenomena lack independent existence, yet still appear like a mirage, a dream or the image of the moon in a clear lake.

Samsara and Nirvana lack even an atom of independent existence, while cause and effect and dependent arising are unmistaken.  We seek your blessings to discern the import of Nagarjuna's thought – that these two are in agreement, and not in mutual contradiction.

And therefore we seek your blessings that we may cross the labyrinth ocean of tantra through the kindness of our Navigator-Vajradhara, and to hold more dear that our lives our vows and words of honor which are the roots of powerful attainments.

We seek your blessings to purge all stains of ordinary appearance and grasping through the generation stage yoga of transforming birth, death, and bardo into the three Buddhakayas, so that whatever appears may arise as a Yidam.

We seek your blessings to actualize in this life the path of Unity of the Clear Light and Illusory Body, which arises from placing your feet, O Protector, at the very center of the central channel at the eight petals of our hearts.

Should we not have completed the points of the path at the time of death, we seek your blessings that we may be led to a Pure Land through either the instructions of applying the five forces, or by the forceful means of Enlightenment, the Guru's transference of mind.

In short, we seek your blessings, O Protector, to be cared for by you from birth to birth, unremittently throughout all our lives, and thus to become your chief disciples, holding every secret of your body, speech, and mind.

O Protector, please grant that all be auspicious for us to be amongst your very first circle of disciples, wherever you manifest Buddhahood, and hence all our temporal and ultimate wishes, without exception, be effortlessly and spontaneously fulfilled.

Having been thus entreated, O Supreme Gurus, pray grant this request: in order to bless us, happily alight on the crown of our heads, and once again set your radiant feet firmly at the corolla of our lotus-hearts.

PUEN-TSOk PAEL-LA ROEL-PAE TrA-SHI SHOK!
Enjoying its glorious perfection - may all be auspicious!

148. DAK-SOk NAM-KYI DENG-NAE JANG-CHUP-BAR,
From now until I and others are Enlightened,
GYI-DANG GYI-GYUR GE-WA CHI-SAk-PA,
(By) whatever merits we have done and will heap up,
ZHING-DIR JE-TSUEN DAM-PAE ZUk-KYI-KU

GYUR-ME DOR-JE TAR-TAEN TrA-SHI SHOK!
Endure like immutable vajra - may all be auspicious!

Final Dedication

149.       Due to this merit may I soon

Attain the enlightened state of a Guru-Buddha,

That I may be able to liberate

All sentient beings from their suffering.

150.       May the precious bodhi mind

Not yet generated arise and grow.

May that which has been generated have no decline

But increase forever more.

151.       So the tradition of Je Tsongkhapa,

The King of the Dharma may flourish,

May all obstacles be pacified

And may all favourable conditions abound.

152.       Through the two collections of myslef and others

Gathered throughout the three times,

May the Doctrine of Conqueror Losang Dragpa

Flourish for evermore
